Insurance Companies

Your local insurance agent will help you determine what coverage you need.  It is a vital first step to have an inventory listing of the jewelry items that you own.  This documentation will help you to determine the need you have for insurance, based on the total and individual value of the items that you own. The best way for you to secure insurance for your jewelry is through your homeowners's or renter's policy. You may also purchase coverage through an individual insurance company that specializes in jewelry. There will be paperwork required to secure insurance on your items.  Formal appraisals that have description details and photographs are your bet protection in case of a loss.  Annual jewelry losses are in the hundreds of millions of dollars per year.  You must establish a record of what you have to prove ownership of your pieces - which will be invaluable in the case of a loss.  Your local insurance agent will help you determine the type and amount of coverage that you will need and will take into account any other security measures that you are taking such as, an alarm system or jewelry safe in your home.

Financial and Estate Advisors

Your Financial Advisor will provide you with an overview of your financial picture.  Your portfolio should also include your jewelry assets. Usually when people seek advice from a Financial Advisor, it is so they can make a sound financial plan for the future.  It is common for the advisor to take an "inventory" of your assets.  Usually these assets would include IRA's, Stocks and Bonds, Retirement Accounts, Pensions and Savings.  It is important to include your jewelry as an asset when you have this discussion with your advisor. Fine jewelry does appreciate over time and if well-maintained, can be used as part of your asset base, if desired.  Many people decide to leave their treasured jewelry to loved ones, others sell the items if they don't have family or "cash out" to divide the proceeds.  Sometimes jewelry is donated to a favorite charity, like a university, to help fund scholarships.

We always suggest that you have a current inventory of the quality jewelry that you own. It is a valuable resource in the case of a loss or to aid in decision making if the time comes that disposal of your jewelry is needed, by yourself or a family member.  Ask your financial or estate advisor for some assistance with incorporating your jewelry assets into your overall financial picture.

Locksmith, Safe and Security System Specialists

'A Triangle of Security" is recommended by Locksmith and Safe Advisors.  The first leg of this security is for protection and deterrence - high security mechanical locks and keys.  The second leg is for protection of personal property - safes and vaults. The third leg is for detection and notification - burglar alarms, CCTV, electronic access control. The order of the legs of the Triangle is important.  The "Peace of Mind" that you receive when you follow the three security steps is money well invested.

The best way to protect your jewelry is to have "layers of protection" in place.  This would include the previously mentioned inspections and insurance coverage.  A vital part of this protection is how you secure your home and the valuables inside.  In the home, place your jewelry in a safe, if possible. If you own pieces that you only wear occasionally, an in-home safe or safe deposit box is best.  An in-home safe can be a huge deterrent in a burglary, if used correctly.  There are standards for quality of safe's and installation procedures that should be followed for maximum benefit.  We don't recommend that you store your jewelry in a jewelry box that is placed in plain sight. A home security alarm system will provide an added layer of protection if used consistently.  Even then, burglars are becoming very bold, breaking in with alarms blaring and going right for the jewelry that is in plan sight.  Again, having an inventory and photos of your jewelry would be invaluable in this unfortunate situation.  Often having immediate information for the authorities will allow recovery of your items.
